Shut up and listen - Church in the Market Place

Shut up and listen

That’s what mums sometimes want to say to their children. Happy mothers’ day to all mums.  Mums do an awesome job.

At the battle of Jericho, Joshua listened when God spoke His plan.  Then Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make any noise with your voice, nor shall a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I say to you, ‘Shout!’ Then you shall shout.”  The men walked, and the men shut up; the men won the victory.  Men, we would win more wars if we shut up and listened to the Lord and put His battle plans into operation.

The man at the Pool of Bethesda was full of reasons and excuses about why he couldn’t get into the water in time to be healed. Jesus was trying to shut him up and say, “Do you want to be well?” But he was so busy talking that he couldn’t hear that his healing was at hand; he was drowning out the Word of the Lord with his persistent talking.  Are you drowning out the Word of the Lord into your lives?

Today the church is in battle, and we need to shut up and hear what the Lord is saying.  We are too busy talking to stop to listen. Psalms 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.”  We are tuned out from being tuned in.  The Bible says many voices in the world want to be heard, however; there is only one voice that will stand beside you in the midst of the greatest battle of your life.

In the desert, the children of Israel were busy gossiping, tale bearing and spreading false news, having believed the report of false witnesses. How many in the body of Christ die unfulfilled and unfruitful today because we are too busy talking, and listening to the gossip, choosing not to believe the true from men and women of God that God has placed over us. 1 Timothy. 2:1-2 “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.”

In 2 Chronicles 20, three armies came up against King Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat’s first reaction was to fear, but he set himself to seek the Lord and proclaimed a fast.  Jehoshaphat waited on the Lord, receiving the battle plan and strategy. Jehoshaphat sent out the singers in praise and worship, singing “Praise the Lord for His mercies endures forever.” He praised his way to victory!

If only God’s people would choose praise and worship over gossip and chatter.  We need to learn to be silent and hear what God is saying.  We need to discard gossip and false witnesses, hear from God and be part of the army that is taking the Jericho’s of our battles, and entering into the promises that God has for us in this hour.  Be as Samuel was:  1Samuel 3:10 Samuel said, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” It’s time to shut up and listen to God’s plan for us.
