Who is the person God uses? - Church in the Market Place

Who is the person God uses?

How can we identify the qualities that God is seeking in the person He takes and uses? 1 Cor. 1: 26-27 For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty.” God uses ordinary people who make themselves available to Him so that He might do extraordinary things in their lives.

God took David from the sheepfold. He took the disciples from the fishing business.   God takes an ordinary person and through him accomplishes extraordinary things. Do you want to be used by God for extraordinary things?

In Luke v4, as Jesus is tested in the wilderness and returns to Galilee, word of Him spreads. Luke 4:42 Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them.”The crowd pressed Jesus because they wanted to have what he had. Jesus needed to go and spread the Word, yet these people wanted to hear more. Clearly he had a problem!

The fishermen became His disciples; an answer to help spread the Word of God. God was using ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things.

What sort of Person Does God Use? What are the tests of God?

A servant heart: Rod Denton says, “Don’t look for leaders; look for servants.” Luke 16:10-12 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”

Obedience: Luke 5: 4-7 … “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” Sometimes God will offend the mind to reveal the heart; Obedience is a strong key to God’s favour.

Brokenness/Humility:God uses humble, broken people; God gives grace to the humble but resists the proud.. “All God’s giants have been weak men, who did great things for God because they reckoned on His being with them.” J. Hudson Taylor.

A heart for people: Luke 5:10b“……from now on you will catch men.”God uses people who have a heart for people; King David had a shepherds’ heart, Jesus was known as the good shepherd. These people are found in our church; those who want to welcome new people.

Availability:Luke V. 11, So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.” If you are totally committed; totally available, then God has a chance to do extraordinary things through your life.

Faithfulness:In v 11, “[the disciples] followed Him”, and never stopped following Him. God needs faithful servants who will follow Him, always and complete His extraordinary deeds.

A servant heart, obedience, humility, a heart for people, availability and faithfulness; these are the qualities that we must cultivate in order to be one of God’s ordinary people! God uses ordinary people, like you and me, but we need to foster these qualities to be chosen to help Him achieve extraordinary things. Let’s get ready!
